Personality provides 'stories' to influence your perception
Personality models (MBTI, DISC, NEO / 5-factors) give us language to describe our patterns of perception - the patterns of our 'inner chimp' (or 'inner child').
The Centaur model goes further to explain not just how people act, but why they REACT. It helps people become conscious of the emotional triggers behind their instinctive behaviours. These relate to the way certain emotions have been blocked in the body since early childhood, which becomes visible in the way body tension is held and becomes 'normal' in the body.
The diagram shows just the gifts and deficits of each character style. The names capture these in a positive way, as archetypal figures that we instinctively understand at a deep level. The value of each style is clear, as well as the potential drawbacks when any style grips too strongly.
Centaur's 'right brain' approach (visual and metaphoric) makes it a practical tool that is simple to grasp and easy to use. It was developed in the 1980s, when Sandy Cotter adapted her training in psychology and the body-mind therapy of bioenergetics to work with business leaders. In 2022, Sandy's book 'Centaur: the metaphysics of leadership' was finally published.
